So much for the financial setbacks history of our house. I took some time off yesterday (last thursday) because I will be meeting a special friend in Moa and that’s where I plan to buy another liter of latex paint. Sadly, it is not available there. So I decided to do other things the next day. Normally I would be happy to get some vicodin around the holidays, but I was in so much pain that I couldn’t even enjoy it. After a day or two though, I feel a LOT better. My knee still looks like a weasel took a bite out it, but now I can walk almost normally. I hope it will be better by next week. There’s a tournament I wanted to attend when I get back in town, but right now I’m in the wrong weight class (no, I’m not fat, I’m just either a little too short for my weight or I need to start doing a lot steroids).
Episodes would typically feature some problem of Tim’s, either as the A Plot or B Plot, and him trying to deal with it in his own stereotypically macho way, and then have to seek out the help of his extremely well-spoken, well-traveled, well-read neighbor Wilson Wilson, whose face was never seen in full Tim would then try to relate Wilson’s advice, mangle it badly , and finally put the advice and his viewpoint into understandable words of his own.
It wasn’t just me. These people are up to no good. I suspect that their main prey is the elderly. They might be sitting at home all day and bored. A nice young man who is well groomed, well spoken, and who seems like a real go-getter, shows up and gives them a great sales pitch. And then he scares the hell out of them and gets them thinking their house is falling apart. This is really sleazy. They are convincing and pressuring people to pay for things they don’t need and are charging them ridiculous prices.
Before you sign a contract with anyone to remodel or renovate your home, ask plenty of questions and get plenty of referrals. Take the time to do your due diligence. Check with the Better Business Bureau and state licensing boards to find out if there are any current complaints or claims filed against a contractor. And never, ever hire an unlicensed builder or contractor.
I think what I found just as useful as analyzing what others did right, is to figure out where it could go wrong. I found two companies that failed at this (one mom & pop outfit in florida, and another who bought a franchise from one of the big companies) and I decided to call them up and talk to them for a loooong time. I performed, in essence, an autopsy on their business so that I wouldn’t make the same mistakes that they did. It was very informative.
The cordless nailers are currently more expensive than the pneumatic models, but of course they don’t require that you have a compressor, or a hose to deal with. Some cordless nailers use a fuel cell for nail propulsion, which needs to be replaced every 500 nails though, so you have to take that cost into account.
